National Apprenticeship Week at CAV

6th February 2025

CAV Systems has been a long-standing supporter of employing, nurturing and highlighting the achievements of apprenticeships, and currently employee apprentices working in a wide range of roles across the business, including production, finance, and maintenance.

National Apprenticeship Week, held between the 10th and 16th of February every year, is a 7-day event uniting the nation to celebrate everything to do with apprentices and the greatly positive impact the programmes have on individuals and business, as well as the economy as a whole.

“The programme has helped me not just learn the basics but also the more complex side of finance, which has coincided with my job as my role has developed.”

– Daisy Sterling, Assistant Management Accountant

Working with local north east providers including Derwentside College and Access Training to support their development, the company works towards supporting their staff training to the highest standard to ensure employees receive the most out of their respective programmes.

“My advice to those thinking of doing an apprenticeship is go for it. You’re never too old to learn.”

– Graeme Whetstone, Quality Technician

CAV have employed a grand total of 14 apprentices over the past few years, eight in manufacturing, two in engineering, and the others in a range of roles from IT, finance, and business administration.

“Apprenticeships are great because you don’t just learn, you get hands-on experience in a working environment. I’ve learnt quite a lot already, can’t wait to see where it takes me.”

– Evan Burns, Lean Manufacturing Apprentice

General Manager Ian Jackson said: “At CAV, we have always valued the benefit of running an apprentice program across our businesses. With an ever-growing apprenticeship offering, working with our training providers CAV has been able to offer multiple opportunities to match our needs as well as providing meaningful experience and learning opportunities to our apprentices.

“We are so proud of our apprentices, past and present, and our current cohort are no exception, adding real value to CAV’s ongoing success supported by a dedicated group of mentors from our workforce.”

CAV recently employed two new apprentices in 2025 in maintenance and manufacturing, and are looking for an additional manufacturing apprentice to join the continuously expanding and evolving team of aerospace experts, highlighting their dedication to the training programme.
